LORTON, Virginia (WANE) - The National Safe Haven Alliance, based in Lorton, Virginia, is calling for increased public awareness of Indiana's Safe Haven laws after a newborn baby is found in a dumpster in Auburn, Indiana.

If a baby is 45 days old or younger, a mother is allowed to leave him or her with personnel at any emergency room, fire station, or law enforcement agency, under Indiana's safe haven law. The law includes a provision that no questions will be asked of that mother.

In a news release from the NSHA, Bob Floyd, an NSHA board member, said, "With the near tragedy in Auburn, there is obviously a great need for more public education about the provisions of the law."
