FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - The United Way is asking for help teaching kids how to read.
Wednesday morning, leaders from the group's Learn United initiative made a plea for 250 more volunteers. They're looking for help in existing programs like Study Connection and Project READS. Others are needed to work with students in classrooms during the regular school day.
"What we're doing is giving them something more than the skills, we're giving them the attention," Said Dr. Wendy Robinson, Fort Wayne Community Schools superintendent. "We're helping to change their attitudes about themselves and about the value of reading, and about the power in reading and writing."
If you'd like to volunteer for one of the Learn United programs, call 469-4030.
