FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - The Voices of Unity (VOU) choir won two gold medals at the World Choir Games in China.
The choir performed in two categories, winning gold in each.
In the Popular Music category, the choir earned enough points to win the gold medal, but more than one can be given because it's based on points. Voices of Unity was awarded the gold medal, runner-up, meaning the choir can be considered the #2 Popular Music Choir in the world, Production Manager Brad Lyons explained.
In the Gospel/Spiritual category, VOU won a gold medal based on points and had the most points overall, making the choir gold medal Grand Champions in that category.
The choir will get gold medals and a trophy for the gospel category.
After the awards ceremony, the choir's production manager, Brad Lyons, and director, Marshall White, spoke with NewsChannel 15's Alyssa Ivanson on the phone.
Listen to the full interview in the video player. Below is a transcript.
Alyssa: "What's going through your mind right now?"
Brad: "We're number one in the world! We're ecstatic. ... We can't hold back our emotions. People are crying and jumping around. We've worked so hard. People said we couldn't do it and that we couldn't come here and do this. We couldn't come to China and sing Gospel. And we took Grand Champion! We're number one in the world!
"We couldn't have gotten here without Fort Wayne and without their contributions. Not just financially, but people putting in blood sweat and tears to get us here."
Alyssa: "What have the reactions been to the choir in China?"
Brand: "We were one of the most anticipated groups because of our YouTube videos and Facebook. When we first took the stage in the Opening Ceremonies, we were surprised that with 10,000 people we got an amazing applause. When we did the competitions, we got standing ovations when we walked on stage as well as when we go off. We've had kids from so many countries want pictures with our young people."
Brad found Mr. White in the crowd.
Alyssa: "Congratulations! How are you feeling?"
Mr. White: "I'm just so happy, so happy. (crying) We did it. We did it. Double gold. They raised the American flag in China.
Alyssa: "When you were raising money for all those months, and it was such a daunting task, you kept saying, 'We're going to bring home the gold.' Was there a little part of you that said, 'Gosh, I hope we can bring home the gold?' And now you did!"
Mr. White: "I'm always pretty sure that when God puts something in my heart, I'm pretty sure it's going to happen. It's been proven to me over and over again in my life. Everything He's told me, has happened. Everything He's (inaudible) is for a reason or purpose. I'm so thankful He has (inaudible) to another level. I hope this country, this state, this city will catch on fire for what we've done here in China. It's absolutely historical. There are thousands of people here from all over the world and it's just amazing what an accomplishment this is.
Alyssa: "Are the sights on 2012 yet?"
Mr. White: "2012? We've been asked tonight for a special performance because we are champions in our categories. So, we have to perform tonight in a special concert just for champions."
Alyssa: "You're performing tonight at the Closing Ceremony?"
Mr. White: "Tonight at the Closing Ceremony. It's called the Concert of Champions. All the champion choirs will sing tonight. We'll sing by ourselves and sing with everyone."
Alyssa: "When do you fly home?"
Mr. White: "We leave here Wednesday."
Alyssa: "With two gold medals!"
Mr. White: "(shouting) Two gold medals!! (choir cheers) This is WANE-TV in Fort Wayne. (White said to the choir members.) Ok, this is the choir: 'Hi Fort Wayne!! (cheers)'"
