130 layoffs reported at Contech plant in Auburn

AUBURN, Ind. (WANE) - With little notice, a company that makes die-cast automotive parts in Auburn has laid off half its workforce.  On Friday, Contech Castings let 130 of its employees know they were out of jobs.

Bob LaCourciere is the vice president of sales and marketing for Contech.  LaCourciere said the workers were laid off because Contech lost its contract with one of its larger customers.  The news came as a surprise not only to the employees, but also to the company.

LaCourciere said Contech found out about the lost contract on Monday.  Leaders notified 130 employees on Friday that they were out of a job, effective immediately.

Most of those employees were said to be machine operators, who made $10 to $15 an hour.

Auburn Mayor Norman Yoder said the layoffs have shocked their community.

“I thought this was behind us but obviously they lost a contract that was very key to their operation,” Yoder said.  “They didn't get their renewal and the folks here are going to be the ones to have to pay the price until they can find some work.”

LaCourciere said Contech is doubtful it will get its contract with that customer back, but the company is always bidding on new work and likes the Auburn plant.  If Contech gets new work, LaCourciere said leaders plan to recall laid off employees.  But that's only if that work and those employees are available.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development will work with employees and explain educational and career services to help them find new jobs.  Employees laid off are encouraged to go to their closest WorkOne Center and visit workoneworks.com .
