FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Officials with Ivy Tech dedicated their new aviation center Thursday afternoon.
This new facility on Cook Road in Fort Wayne is twice as big as the old one, which means Ivy Tech can schedule more classes for more students and those students can get through the program faster.
Leaders said that's a good thing because the need for aviation mechanics is on the rise.
"The tech fields are really good right now because that's where the job openings are. About 20 percent of the aviation mechanics are retiring in the next five years, and there hasn't been a lot of push in the past to train people for these jobs so there's an upcoming shortage," explained program chair Sheena Nolan.
