FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Indiana University – Purdue University Fort Wayne hosted two educational events for students on Saturday.
68 spelling bee winners from Fort Wayne area public, private, and home schools competed in The Journal Gazette's 59th Annual Allen County Spelling Bee at IPFW's Rhinehart Music Center in the Auer Hall.
Molly Rommel, the Allen County Spelling Bee coordinator, said the competition started out with 13,000 students and was then narrowed down to 68 students.
Lwin Moeaung won the Spelling Bee. Lwin is a sixth grader from Lutheran South Unity School. He will now compete with winners from 15 northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio counties at the Area Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 9 at IPFW's Rhinehart Music Center Recital Hall.
The winner of the Area Spelling Bee will compete at the 86th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. in May.
IPFW also hosted the 2013 Science Olympiad Saturday morning.
Ahmed Mustafa, associate professor of biology at IPFW and event co-director, said seven teams from five different area high schools competed in the event.
The Science Olympiad competition consisted of five categories:
● Life science
● Earth/space science
● Physical science
● Engineering
● Science inquiry
Each event competition was directed and judged by an IPFW faculty member or local expert in each field.
