FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Residents at Coliseum Park Apartments were awakened early Wednesday morning after a loud boom and explosion jolted the neighborhood.
Several residents told NewsChannel 15 they heard a loud explosion that shook buildings and shattered windows.
Around 1:10 a.m., Fort Wayne Police and Fire Department personnel were called to the 3900 block of Newport Avenue for a reported car fire.
Residents told NewsChannel 15 there was never any fire. FWFD's Stacey Fleming confirmed that no fire was ever found.
Responders did find a car in the parking lot that had been destroyed. The windows of nearby vehicles were blown out as well. According to FWPD's John Chamber's, there were no injuries.
The vehicle was wrapped in a tarp and taken away for further evidence processing by investigators.
Kyle Mattingly, a resident at the complex, was in bed when he heard the noise.
"What I initially heard was just a really loud boom. At first I thought it was lightning, but it didn't sound like lightning. Then I thought it was a transformer, but it wasn't really sounding like a transformer."
Mattingly said the area is typically quiet and doesn't have many problems.
"I ran outside with my phone and there was a car pretty well destroyed," Mattingly said. "The first thing I thought was bomb because I hadn't heard anything like that except on videos from Afghanistan."
The Fort Wayne Police Department and agents from ATF were also called to the scene to investigate the incident “just in case it was something more than just an explosion,” said Chambers.
