WARSAW, Ind. (WANE) - A Texas man's van was shot 10 times while driving to a relatives house in Milford on Interstate 65 Thursday morning. Warsaw Police are investigating the shooting after a man showed up a Kosciusko Community Hospital in Warsaw around 3:00 a.m. Thursday morning, suffering from a minor gunshot wound to his left shoulder.
Jose Montiel, 30, of Houston, Texas, using a translator, told investigators that he has been driving from Houston and was going to his brother-in-law's home in Milford, Ind.
He said that while he was driving on Interstate 65 on the northwest side of Indianapolis, he stopped to get gas and as he got back onto the interstate, he heard several loud bangs and the window of his van broke and felt pain in his shoulder.
Jose drove a short distance and checked his back and noticed blood. He called his brother-in-law who had him drive to Milford, since he did not speak English and did not know where a hospital was. When he arrived in Milford, he was taken to the hospital.
Milford Police found a white 2005 Chevrolet van at the Milford residence and noticed ten bullet holes in the van. The van was impounded to the Warsaw Police Department, who later planned to release it back to Montiel.
"Through the detectives involved with [the investigation], they do not believe there is any criminal activity involved here," said Warsaw Police Lt. Kip Shuter.
Montiel said in an interview with NewsChannel 15 that he does not know anyone in Indianapolis, and could only imagine why someone would shoot at him.
"Maybe they confused me with someone," he said in Spanish.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Warsaw Police Department's Investigations Division at (574) 372-9531 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-922-5378, if preferred to remain anonymous.
