FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has announced that brief, intermittent closures of I-69 just north of Exit 116, will continue between 9 pm Wednesday evening until 5 am Thursday morning.
Beginning at 9 pm Wednesday, the northbound lanes of I-69 will experience up to 20-minute stoppages as crews work on the beams for the Union Chapel bridge over I-69. On Thursday night, August 9, brief, intermittent closures of northbound I-69 will again take place between 9 pm and 5 am on Friday morning to accommodate work on the Union Chapel Bridge.
Early Wednesday morning the northbound lanes were closed for several hours after a cement beam fell partially into the roadway. No one was injured.
The Allen County Sheriff’s Office will assist with the stoppages. Arrow boards and barrels will direct traffic to the left lane in preparation for the actual stoppage of traffic on I-69. Weather permitting, it is expected that the northbound I-69 stoppages will be complete by Friday morning, August 10, at 5 a.m.
As work continues, southbound I-69 will undergo similar stoppages for beam placement at a yet-to-be-determined date. Crews will also have additional future need for lane closures on I-69 once beams are in place as they set metal deck pans onto the beams, and as concrete pours occur, on the Union Chapel bridge over the interstate lanes. INDOT will keep the media and public informed of scheduled I-69 lane closures for this work. All lane closures are currently expected to take place between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. All work is weather permitting.
Motorists may wish to select alternate routes and/or plan accordingly for the traffic delays on I-69.
The interchange is still on schedule to open by late fall 2012, with the exception of the northbound on-ramp to I-69 from Union Chapel Road. The entire project will be complete by summer 2013.
