FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - More than 200 people turned out to walk in Fort Wayne’s first CureSearch Walk to raise funds and awareness in the fight against childhood cancers.

The one mile walk took place at Franke Park Saturday morning.

The event was organized after three families from the area participated in a CureSearch Walk in Indianapolis the year before.

“They thought there [were] enough folks and enough community support for an event like this [in Fort Wayne] and I’m happy to say they were right,” Brecka Putnam, regional development manager for CureSearch said.

During opening ceremonies, families and supporters released balloons in memory of children who had lost the cancer battle.

A group of about 20 young cancer survivors and those currently in remission or receiving treatment led the walk from Pavilion 2 as the “2012 CureSearch Walk Champions.”

A total of $24,351 was raised during the first-ever fundraiser.  Member on its organizing committee said work would begin immediately following the event to plan the walk for 2013.
