FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A fire broke out at Baldwin Creek Apartments early Sunday morning.

Firefighters were called to 1920 Hobson Road at around 8:00 a.m. for a second story fire. Firefighters said they saw flames and smoke coming from the roof of the south end of the complex.

Stacey Fleming, of the Fort Wayne Fire Department, said people were on balconies on the second floor and had to be rescued. Firefighters also did an interior search of the building and evacuated more residents.

Fleming said the fire happened in Building F and there are 24 units in that building. Four to six of the units have been affected from the fire.

Firefighters called the fire under control at around 8:25 a.m.

The Red Cross assisted around 40 people who have been displaced after the fire. The Red Cross said there's a reason why they only take monetary donations.

""We gave some additional assistance this morning to two of the families. They seem to be starting to deal with the situation and starting to look forward to where their next residence will be," said Katherine Mac Aulay, Chief Operations Officer for the American Red Cross of Northeast Indiana.

Neighbors tell NewsChannel 15 they saw families jumping from the second balcony to escape the fire. Neighbors said they tried to help as much as they could.

""We had them come into out apartment, some other families came out, gave shoes and socks and tried to help them," said Mary Thomas, a neighbor who lives in the building next to Building F.

According to the police report, one person was transported to a local hospital in good condition for a smoke related condition.

Police said there were no other injuries.

Fleming said on Monday that a malfunctioning light fixture caused the fire.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department has ruled it accidental.
