FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - St. Mary's Catholic Church honored a former Fort Wayne mayor Wednesday by presenting him with the annual Father Tom O'Connor Light of Christ Award.

Paul Helmke served as mayor from 1988 to 2000. During that time, he worked closely with the faith-based community to create an anti-violence program called Stop the Madness.

Helmke then served as president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence from 2006 to 2011.

Catholic leaders said Helmke was being honored with the award for his leadership in public policy and nonviolence.

"Seeing what St. Mary's and Father Tom did to help feed the hungry and clothe those that needed to be clothed, the lesson I had learned growing up in my faith is that we have an obligation to help those that are less well off," said Helmke.

Helmke is now a professor at the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs in Bloomington.
