FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Fort Wayne's Habitat for Humanity raised the walls on its 152nd house in Allen County Saturday.
Shyraa Armour is the partner family who will live in the home at 3928 East Sherwood Terrace. The home is the fifth build supported through the "Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity" partnership.
Around 30 to 40 people came out Saturday to help build the home.
"The volunteers come out and help along side the partner families. So that's another good thing that a lot of the volunteers like to do because they actually get to work with the people they are helping out," Kory Stucky, the volunteer coordinator with Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity, said.
Habitat partner families are not just given a house. They have to complete 300 hours of "sweat equity" by volunteering with Habitat, including on the construction site. The families also attend ten home ownership classes and repay a 20-year, no-interest mortgage.
The Armour home build was also financially supported through a grant from NIPSCO. The grant will be used to provide the home with a high-efficiency natural gas furnace and other natural gas appliances.
