FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) H.O.P.E. for Animals and a local veterinarian helped save the lives of a pregnant dog and her puppies by performing an emergency c-section.
On Friday, January 11, the organization got a call that a pit bull had given birth to four puppies, but was unable to deliver the entire litter. The family only had a few dollars, and the vet they went to referred them to H.O.P.E.
One of the agency's veterinarians, Dr. Carol Fretz, was able to successfully perform the c-section, saving the mom and four more puppies.
In addition, H.O.P.E. was able to spay the dog under a program called Snip-by-Zip 46806, sponsored by PetSmart Charities. Anyone who lives in 46806 and has a pit bull is eligible to have the animal spayed or neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped, and registered with the city for only $5.00. All eight puppies will go home with a certificate under this program as well, which can be used as soon as they're four months old.
