FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - H.O.P.E. for Animals is announcing it will provide free rabies vaccines and distemper/parvo vaccines, $5 heartworm tests and $3,000 worth in spay and neuter vouchers for pit bulls.

Megan Reynolds, H.O.P.E. for Animals’ Community Outreach Coordinator said, “The reason for only the pit bulls is due to an overcrowding in animals shelters around the area. Pit Bulls are the number one animal taken into the shelters and also the number one animal euthanized.”

The Allen County SPCA will be on site providing $5 micro-chips, the Fort Wayne Pet Food Pantry will be doing a free food distribution and the Fort Wayne Pit Bull Coalition will also be on site.

Reynolds said, “H.O.P.E. for Animals is excited to be able to offer these much needed resources in order to better the lives of the companion animals in our city. The support we have received from the Ryan Newman Foundation, the Global Alliance for Rabies Control, Phizer Animal Health, and Boehringer-Ingelheim has allowed us to reach out to a large number of animals in need this fall. Additionally, partnering with the Allen County SPCA, the Fort Wayne Pet Food Pantry, and the Fort Wayne Pit Bull Coalition has created another opportunity for a united front for animal welfare in Fort Wayne that will continue to grow.”

The event will take place on October 1, 2011 at the Faith United Methodist Church at 207 E. Dewald Street in Fort Wayne.

Vaccines and other services will be available on a first come, first serve basis while supplies last.
