FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) -- A proposed special tax to help Fort Wayne cover costs for tree damage caused by an invasive beetle has been derailed.
The city's parks board on Tuesday decided against seeking what could have been a $10 per parcel special level added to each property tax bill next year. City Council members and other had criticized the proposal since it was first raised last month.
The Journal Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/WIxkLY ) the parks department is spending $1.1 million to remove 4,500 dead and dying ash trees damaged by the emerald ash borer. Other ash trees are also infected and officials estimate about 10,000 trees will need to be replaced. Parks board President Richard Samek asked for a report by June 1 on the total costs and possible sources of money.
