FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - UPDATE February 3, 2012 - Bishop D'Arcy lost the battle with cancer on Sunday morning.
-----
Just over a week after Bishop John D'Arcy announced he returned to the Diocese of Fort Wayne–South Bend since receiving treatment for cancer in Massachusetts, rumors of his death circulated through social media.
Messages were spreading Saturday through networks like Twitter and Facebook.
The Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese assured people via Facebook that Bishop D'Arcy has not passed away.
This is the message the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese posted on its Facebook page :
Dear members of the Diocesan family,
There are reports on Twitter that Bishop D'Arcy has passed. This is not true. He needs your prayers now more than ever, but again - he has not passed. Please continue to pray. Thank you
The former head of the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese was hospitalized in early January after doctors found a very rare form of cancer in the lung and brain. D'Arcy was diagnosed with prostate cancer in February of 2011 and underwent treatment.
