FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)  Northeast Indiana's first Park(ing) Day event took place Friday in downtown Fort Wayne.

Park(ing) Day is a nationwide effort in which metered parking spots are temporarily turned into public parks.

The project first came about in 2005 when organizers transformed a single metered parking space into a park in an area of San Francisco that the city had designated as lacking public open space.
