FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - The annual Martin Luther King Junior Unity Celebration took place downtown Monday morning.
The celebration included special guest speaker James Young, the first African American Mayor of Philadelphia, Mississippi.
Philadelphia is the location of the 1964 civil rights murders that inspired the movie "Mississippi Burning."
The unity celebration also included Heartland and the University Singers from Saint Francis performing at the North Campus Auditorium Monday night.
University of Saint Francis students also celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day by volunteering at the Saint Vincent de Paul Thrift store, Charis House, the Boys and Girls Club, and the Ave Maria House.
Several students also spent part of their day off of school organizing donations at the Mustard Seed Furniture Bank on Illinois Road.
