FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Fort Wayne firefighters quickly put out an apartment fire at a house in the 900 block of Third Street late Tuesday night.

Around 10:15, crews arrived at the house and found heavy flames coming from the rear of the house. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading throughout the remainder of the house, preventing damage from the other apartment.

Fire officials said most of the damage was to the rear and exterior of the home, although smoke and water damage was moderate throughout other parts of the house.

Officials said at one woman was home, but escaped safely. Firefighters also rescued a family cat from the house and were able to give the animal oxygen to keep it alive.

The Battalion Chief told NewsChannel 15 the woman's daughter was driving to the house when she learned of the fire and was involved in an accident. He said she was not injured and was transported to the home to be with her mother.

The fire remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Fire Department.
