FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Sunday kicks off National Fire Prevention Week. It's a time that fire departments across the county all emphasize fire safety and prevention.
Captain Dave Meadows from the Fort Wayne Fire Department came on First News Sunday.
"Obviously as a fire service, we promote fire prevention year round. It's our main goal, make sure people don't have fires. But this year's theme is have two ways out. So, we want to make sure people survive their fires too, if they happen to have one," Capt. Meadows said.
Meadows said everyone should have a fire escape plan at their house and to have two ways out, in case the first is blocked by smoke or fire.
"If you don't have a fire escape plan, you really need to develop one and practice it. And just talk with your family about this type of stuff. Most fires could be prevented if people would just be a bit more careful," Meadows said.
He added it's smart to take a lesson from schools and public buildings and have a visual escape plan and do practice drills with your family.
