ASHLEY, Ind. (WANE) - Several local fire departments collected money for the Newtown school shooting.
Hudson, Helmer, and Ashley fire departments hosted a "Fill the Boot Drive" that will benefit the shooting victims' families.
"It just hit close to home. It could happen here," Peggy Pankop,a lieutenant at the Ashley Fire Department, said.
Firefighters worked in shifts on Saturday at three different locations to raise the money. One firefighter even dressed up as Santa and danced on the fire truck to attract customers.
Pankop said the firefighters raised $400 in bills alone. They haven't counted the change yet.
The money will be sent to Connecticut on Monday, December 24.
