By 10 a.m., NewsChannel had received multiple reports from viewers via Report !t of the large fire at the Huntington apartment complex.

Crews were still working to put out the fire that had spread to 12 units several hours later. 11 families have been displaced as a result of the flames, including Dwight Broom.

"I'm kind of at a loss for words. It's my first fire I've been in, it's kind of crazy, really," he said.

Broom said he was washing dishes Monday morning when he heard the fire alarms go off and smelled smoke.

"Went outside in the hallway to see what was going on, and then there was smoke everywhere. Then, I ran back inside, got some clothes on, came back outside," said Broom.

Gina Link, Carriage Place Apartments' property manager, told NewsChannel 15 that when alarms went off, they knocked on all the doors and got everyone out safely. Link said those alarms are new and were installed in September.

"We were able to hear it from the office of them going off," she said. "So, they're new and obviously did a great job of alerting people of what's going on."

Link said out of the 11 families, only one did not have renters' insurance. She said renters' insurance is mandatory for all residents before moving in.

Fire officials are still working to find the cause of the fire.
