Early Veterans Day celebrations at area schools

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Area elementary schools celebrated Veterans Day a couple days early on Thursday. Veterans day is on Sunday, November 11, 2012.

Holland elementary held a musical tribute and program for veterans on Thursday morning. Guests were able to see the Wall of Honor at the school.

The Wall of Honor has pictures and biographical information about veteran's family members.

Korean War vets were also at the school to share their stories. They said I i's important to get the word out to them about the past wars.

"We need to get the word out to the young students about these different wars because a lot of the history books don't cover the wars like they did in the past,” said Lynn Shady, a Korean War Veteran.

Kekionga Middle school held a Veterans Day breakfast at 7 a.m.for all staff, parents, grandparents and other relatives who served or are serving in the Armed Forces. 

Haley Elementary held a similar program at 1 p.m. on Thursday. Harris Elementary had their program at 2 p.m.

Officials at Memorial Coliseum announced on Thursday morning that Fort Wayne will commemorate the 50 th anniversary of the authorization of US troops to help South Vietnam fight North Vietnam by President John F. Kennedy with a “Vietnam Veterans of America National Homecoming” at the Coliseum in October 2013.

The program will honor all military personnel and their families who served in Vietnam.
