Donations fight hunger during holidays

School, church provide food for 200 families

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Around two hundred families have been provided food for the holidays thanks to donations made possible by a church and school coming together.

Pine Hills Church collaborated with Abbett Elementary School to support the school’s lower income population.

According to Sarah Adams, the director of education for Associated Churches, Abbett Elementary is one of the more impoverished schools in the area.  The school is located on Smith Street in the Fort Wayne Community Schools district.

Pine Hills and staff at Abbett hosted a volunteer registration for food donations to families before the school ended for winter break.  Church members who wished to donate had a list of food to purchase from area grocery stores before distribution took place on Saturday morning.

“People are really unaware of the hunger that goes on here in Fort Wayne.  To see that over 200 families needed that food to make sure that they were able to eat, not only for Christmas Day, but for the whole two weeks was so important,” Adams said.

Volunteers helped give out boxes of food, whole turkeys and ham outside Abbett Elementary Saturday to those who registered.  Some food was also delivered to recipients’ homes.
