Dog who suffered broken legs ready to be adopted

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A dog that is still part of an open cruelty investigation is now ready to be adopted.

18-month-old Sawyer, a Yorkshire Terrier mix, was turned over to Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control on January 4 with two broken legs. Officials said Sawyer's injuries did not appear to be consistent with being hit by a vehicle as the animal had no abrasions or scrapes. The bones in both legs were both cleanly broken.

The shelter said the dog's injuries are still under investigation. Officials believe someone threw him - and that caused the broken legs.

On January 15, Sawyer received surgery to place plates and screws in both legs.

FWACC relied on donations to care for the dog through its Angel Fund .

The shelter said the Yorkie mix was placed in a private foster home until he was ready to be adopted.

"The biggest concern about traumatic events with any animal is to make sure their mental health is stable. Sawyer is just a fun, loving great puppy who seems to be making a full recovery, not only physically, but mentally as well," AmyJo Sites, deputy director at FWACC, said.

Adoption profiles for the dog will be accepted starting Monday. FWACC said a lottery system will be used to select an adoption candidate, who will be given an opportunity to meet Sawyer on Tuesday between noon and 5 p.m.

The shelter will select two alternates in the event that the first candidate declines the adoption. Only the family whose name is drawn from the lottery will be able to interact with Sawyer, due to the high number of people who have expressed interest in adopting the dog.

To apply for the adoption of Sawyer:

• Print a Pet Adoption Profile from the Animal Care & Control website and fax it to (260) 427-5514
• Come to the shelter between the hours of noon and 5 p.m. on Monday, March 25 to complete and submit a profile
• Be sure to write “Sawyer Adoption” on the Adoption Profile

FWACC is located at 3020 Hillegas Road in Fort Wayne.
