FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Divorce isn't the easiest process to go through for any couple that's going through or considering it, but one law firm has come up with a way to make is less stressful.
"I've heard unique, I've heard crazy, I've heard exciting, I've heard extraordinary," said Christopher LaPan, attorney with The Law Offices of Tracey Rosswurm.
Destination Divorces is a new way to go through a divorce. Skipping the court proceedings, this process goes straight to the mediation part of it, but the unique part about it is you can go on a vacation resort with your soon-to-be ex-spouse, in separate rooms, to hammer out the details.
"This sequesters them from the option of having non legal people giving legal advice," said LaPan. "The second reason is because it gives people the opportunity to calm down and decompress."
Usually the couple will take a three day weekend, preferably Friday through Sunday. LaPan said all day Friday, the couples work out the details of the divorce with the mediator going between the two. If nothing is worked out on Friday, then it's pushed back to Saturday. By Sunday, a deal should be reached and the attorneys will promptly file the documents with the court once they arrive back to the office.
The new approach is the only concept in Fort Wayne and is only 30 days old. With this being an emotional time, LaPan feels this is a way to make this procedure as easy as possible for both parties.
"When you go through a divorce in Allen County, there are several procedural hurdles that have to be taken," he said. "We looked at the process and thought, how do we truncate this, why don't we just cut to the chase."
LaPan's first couple to try this concept will be flying out to Scottsdale, Arizona next week.
