FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Crews working to repair a broken water main accidentally punctured a gas line Sunday morning.
Around 9 a.m., crews with Fort Wayne City Utilities were working to repair a water main break in the 1900 block of Third Street when they accidentally struck an unmarked gas line.
A hole about eight feet in diameter, filled with water, was bubbling from the leaking gas.
NIPSCO crews were immediately on scene to assess the situation. Additional members from NIPSCO were working to pump water out of the hole and close off the pipe.
Several areas around the dig site were marked for other utilities. It's not clear why the punctured line was struck or not properly marked.
Crews did not have a timetable for repairs, nor did City Utilities know when the water main would be repaired.
Fort Wayne firefighters initially responded but were not needed.
Area homes were not being evacuated.
