Court documents say homeless man is responsible for a recent home invasion

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A homeless man is behind bars for allegedly breaking into a home, tying up three adults, and holding them at gunpoint.  According to police, the home invasion took place around 6:30 Saturday morning, on the 2600 block of Pennsylvania Street.

According to police, an adult woman and two children were home, when Johnson, and at least one other man, entered the home.  The men then woke the woman up and pointed a gun to her head.

"They bind her hands with zip ties and put duct tape on her so she can’t make any noise," said Raquel Foster, the Fort Wayne Police Department's public information officer.

In a probable cause affidavit, Johnson and the other male were said to be armed with guns and wearing black hoodies and had something covering their faces.  The men then started looking for cash, and other valuables.

"Based on the timeline, they may have been in that home for at least a couple of hours ransacking that home," Foster said.

While the men were still in the house, two other men arrived, who police say also lived there.  They were also tied up.

"It is almost as if they disrupted the crime, and then become victims themselves," Foster said.

According to the probable cause document, Johnson and the other man involved were able to find at least $500 in cash in the home.  They also took a laptop computer, a flat screen television, and jewelry.

They also stole a 2007 black Dodge Charger, the car of one victims.

Police said those stolen items were put in the car, and possibly a black SUV.

When Johnson and the man left, the victims were able to get free, and call police.  Dispatch put out a vehicle description, and the Charger was located a few blocks from the home invasion.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Johnson led police on a vehicle and foot pursuit before he could finally be arrested.

According to court documents, Johnson is facing nine felonies.  That includes criminal confinement, robbery, auto theft, receiving stolen property, and resisting law enforcement.

Where an address typically goes, the court document said Johnson's address is, "HOMELESS."

"Most of your homeless individuals, they really don’t have access to those types of weapons," she said.  "We’re talking about an individual who was armed.  Obviously acting with someone else."

Foster added some times these crimes will happen when a criminal influences or persuades a homeless person to be an accomplice in a crime, but said it's rare for a homeless person to enter someone's home.

"We do see some strong armed robberies, or maybe the use of force and purse snatching, but we don’t see this time of crime where they’re going into homes in the middle of the night armed with handguns.  That’s pretty uncommon."
