HUNTINGTON, Ind. (WANE) Huntington County Sheriff's Deputy Sergeant Steve Coe and his wife Patti were recognized on Friday for helping complete strangers after a January accident left their car totaled and left them stranded.
On January 21, a couple in their 70s were traveling from Michigan to Florida. The man driving fell asleep and drove across the median on I-69 into oncoming traffic. The van flipped and the rear was hit by a semi.
Luckily, the couple walked away with just bumps and bruises but they lost most of what they packed.

Sergeant Coe responded to the accident on southbound I-69 near mile marker 284. He called his wife to pick them up from the hospital, help them search through their car, and drive them to a hotel.
"Patti's Mom travels back and forth to Florida on a yearly basis and I guess I hope that if she were to have trouble somewhere that she would receive the same kind of care," said Coe.
Huntington County Sheriff Terry Stoffel presented the Coes a plaque for going above and beyond the call of duty.
The Coes said this experience is one they'll never forget.
Patti said the couple made it back home safe and sent a thank you card last week.
