FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Fort Wayne City Council has given its stamp of approval to a proposed water rate increase.
By a vote of 7 to 2, the council approved a proposal which would allow City Utilities to increase water rates by nearly 40-percent over a three year period.
Representatives for City Utilities said the rate hike is necessary because of increased costs and to make repairs to Fort Wayne’s aging water system.
Originally the rate hike was going to happen over a two year period however the council requested the increase be over three years to help spread out the costs for Fort Wayne residents.
The issue now goes to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission which will make the final decision on whether to allow the increase.
That hearing will likely happen sometime in the next eight to 12 months.
