Cooling centers, Red Cross shelter open to help those without power

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - If you're still without power and need a cool place to stay, the Red Cross shelter is open in Fort Wayne.

We talked with a family who has been there since Saturday. The Howells are one of thousands of families in Allen County still without power. They say they're thankful the shelter and cooling centers have been opened, because they had nowhere else to go.

"It really was a blessing because we lost like $200 worth of food. The trailer we just bought is all electric so there was no way we could have even cooked," Donald Howell said.

"I was mad but I try to look at it in a positive way. It's a temporary situation. It's not a permanent situation. We still have a home regardless," Sarah Howell said.

The Red Cross is open Wednesday night. The cooling centers around Fort Wayne open again Thursday.

The Red Cross shelter is located at the First Assembly of God Church, 1400 West Washington Center Rd.
