GARRETT, Ind. (WANE) - Family and friends held a benefit golf outing Saturday to raise money for Sgt. JaBraun Knox's wife and son.
Knox was killed in Afghanistan in May.
Saturday's benefit will help his wife, Courtney, and son, Braedyn. Organizers also want to establish a scholarship in his name at DeKalb High School.
They hope the event and scholarship will serve as a way to remember Knox and keep his legacy going.
"It helps keep Braun's memory alive for us and it's also something Braun would be really proud of. It's an honor for us to be able to establish a scholarship for Braun at the high school, for someone who is an athlete, because he was such a great athlete and a good student and a dynamic person. And so, this just definitely keeps his memory alive for us," Krista Berning, Knox's aunt, said.
There was also a silent auction. Their goal was to raise between $15-20,000. Organizers plan to make this an annual event.
