FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) said U.S. 27/Clinton Street was closed effective Wednesday, March 14 th for a re-alignment and replacement of the bridge over Spy Run Creek.

Clinton Street will be closed, from State Boulevard to Elizabeth Street, starting March 14 at 6 p.m. Although the road will re-open to traffic in late August, the project will not be completed until late October. These closures are weather permitting.

The official traffic detour is along Coliseum Boulevard/SR 930 to Washington Boulevard to U.S. 27.

Traffic will also be re-routed into downtown.

For local traffic, U.S. 27/Clinton Street will be diverted east to Spy Run Avenue at State Boulevard. Traffic will then be directed south to Elizabeth Street on Spy Run Avenue and then west on Elizabeth Street to Clinton Street South. During construction, Spy Run Avenue will be maintained as a two-way street for approximately three blocks.

The purpose of the project is to replace and raise the existing U.S. 27/Clinton Street south bridge over Spy Run Creek, which is located just north of downtown Fort Wayne. The project will also change the footprint of the roadway to soften curves, thereby improving driver safety.

District Deputy Commissioner Bob Alderman said, “While we understand the inconvenience we are causing with this project to the many citizens who travel this route daily, we only ask they recognize that the new road will make their travel much safer at its completion”.

Throughout the construction period, motorists can check on the status of the project by going to www.clintonstreet.indot.in.gov .  Primco was awarded the contract based on the low bid of $2.1 million.
