FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Communities across northeast Indiana have been monitoring drought conditions and considering burn bans if one has not already been announced. Noble and Steuben counties have issued such regulations.
The Fort Wayne Fire Department has not determined a burn ban necessary for the Summit City as this time. Residents are reminded that much of what is banned in outlining counties is already prohibited in Fort Wayne city limits through various ordinances.
“There is no open burning allowed with the exception of campfires or permitted bonfires,” Fort Wayne fire marshal, Jim Murua said.
Fire officials said they will continue to keep an eye on the weather to decide whether a ban is necessary for backyard fire pits or outdoor fireplaces.
“We look at how dry it’s been and how dry it’s going to continue to be,” Murua said. “[We] take a look at the grasses [and] brush that’s out there right now.”
The use of fireworks would be included in a ban if necessary during the limited times fireworks are allowed. Fireworks are banned in Fort Wayne except for specified days before July 4 and other holidays.
People participating in open burning, the use of fireworks and other prohibited activities could face a $50 fine for each violation or charges for criminal mischief.
