FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Starting January 1, 2014 online-only retailers like Amazon.com will charge sales tax for customers in Indiana.
The state entered the “Amazon.com deal” in early 2012. On Monday, the Indiana Merchants for Tax Fairness coalition announced a plan to move the effective date.
A proposal to charge online sales tax by July 1, 2013 will be brought in front of the state legislature during the next session.
“It helps retailers with two important shopping seasons; back to school and the holiday Christmas season,” Grant Monahan, president of the Indiana Retail Council said. “If we waited until January 1, 2014 as the deal is currently struck, retailers will be at a disadvantage in Indiana for those two critical shopping seasons.”
Monahan cited studies during a press conference Monday that indicated a 50,000 retail job loss in Indiana over the past ten years. It’s estimated the state misses out on $75,000-125,000 annually in sales tax revenue to online transactions.
