Bellmont High School prom promotes cancer awareness after classmate's mom is diagnosed

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A Bellmont High School student found out his mother has breast cancer, so his fellow classmates came together to support their family in a special way.

The theme for Bellmont High School's prom was "Light Up the Night", but some students at Bellmont wanted to shine the light on something more important, breast cancer awareness, through their outfits.

"We were trying to think of something special to do, so we decided to wear pink vests in honor of Katie and breast cancer," said Cody Walters, senior at Bellmont High School.

Pink vests, pink ties and even pink ribbons were the theme in honor of Katie Birch. Birch was diagnosed with breast cancer a few weeks ago and just had surgery. Cody started a website to help raise money to pay her medical bills. Her son, Isaac, didn't know he and his family had so much support.

You really don't know how many people you have there for you until something like this happens," he said.

Katie was even surprised at what the students did for her.

""I wouldn't be this good or wouldn't be here right now, you know, this far if they wouldn't help me. So, I'm really proud of these guys," she said.

Katie will undergo her chemo treatments in the coming weeks. The family said they're ready to fight and appreciate all the support during this tough time.

There is a website for anyone who would like to help the Birch family. For more information, click here .
