FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - After several complaints, the Northern Indiana Better Business Bureau is warning people about a tax preparation business in Fort Wayne.

The BBB said Instant Tax Service , located at 3811 S. Calhoun Street, is not BBB accredited. The business has an F rating, on a scale of A+ to F, according to the BBB's website.

According to Mike Coil, President and CEO of the BBB, Instant Tax Service tells customers it will cost $300 to do their taxes, but after several hidden charges, people are actually being charged around $700 or $800. Coil said this information comes from several of the people who used the tax preparation business in the past.

Coil also warns area residents to never give out personal information over email or phone.

"If you receive a call purportedly from the IRS, don't take the bait; don't give anyone your Social Security Number or other personal or identifiable information. The IRS will not send you an email or call you," Coil said.

Other tips the BBB gave for choosing a reliable tax preparer include:

  • Get references and do your research
  • Look for credentials
  • Get a firm estimate in writing
  • Don't fall for the promise of big refunds
  • Think about accessibility
  • Avoid refund anticipation loans
