FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Many people say love is priceless, but when it comes to Valentine's Day, some people spend hundreds of dollars for their significant other.

For many businesses, this is the busiest day of the year. With Valentine's Day falling on Thursday, businesses such as restaurants are expected to busy all weekend. Restaurant workers even help partners with making this day special for their loved ones.

"Maybe about once a year, someone proposes in the restaurant on Valentine's Day," said Kenneth Davenport, manager at Biaggi's. "We'll take the ring, stick it into a piece of chocolate cake or tie it to a cannoli," he said.

Some couples tell NewsChannel 15 they plan to keep it simple because of the economy, but that's not stopping some couples from going all out this year.

"Most people [will] probably [pay] $30 to $100, on an average," said Doug Moring, owner of Moring's Flowers and Gifts Shop. "We have some guys come in and spend a little bit more than that."

Another popular item to buy on Valentine's Day is chocolates.

"On average, anybody could spend 20 to 100 dollars it just depends on what they're wanting to purchase," said Sedina Husidic of DeBrand Gourmet Chocolate Shoppe.

Locally, people are expected to spend between $100 and $260.

The National Retail Federation expects Americans to spend $18.6 billion for Valentine's Day this year.
