Garbage and recycling reminder for the holidays

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - There will be no garbage or recycling collection on Tuesday, December 25.

The collection schedule will run one day behind through the rest of the week. For example, normal Wednesday collection will be on Thursday, December 27. Thursday collection will be on Friday, and Friday collection will be on Saturday.

Residents should place carts out the night before their schedule pick-up.

The Allen County Solid Waste Management District has also provided the following recycling tips for after the holidays.

Beginning on Wednesday, December 26 and continuing through January 18, 2013, you can drop off your Christmas trees at the following locations:

Fort Wayne Area

  • National Serv-All - 6231 MacBeth Road, Drop off hours:  Mon.-Fri.: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Sat. 8 a.m.- noon
  • Allen County Highway Garage - 2234 Carroll Road
  • Foster Park West - Soccer field parking lot, west side
  • Foellinger Theatre - Back parking lot, southwest corner
  • McMillen Park - Pool parking lot

Monroeville Area

  • Monroeville compost site - 200 Utility Drive

Leo-Cedarville Area

  • Across from Riverside Gardens Park

New Haven Area

  • Jury Park
  • Meadowbrook School-Parking lot
  • North side of City Hall-815 Lincoln Highway East

Woodburn Area

  • Front Street under the Water Tower

Plastic bags, ornaments and tinsel must be removed from the trees first.

The following items can be recycled:

  • Greeting cards
  • Envelopes
  • Gift cards and tags
  • Non-metallic wrapping paper
  • Non-metallic gift bags (handles removed)
  • Cardboard with clear plastic windows
  • Gift boxes
  • Old calendars (coils removed)
  • Electronics
  • Christmas Trees

The following items cannot be recycled:

  • Disposable cups and tableware
  • Styrofoam
  • Tissue paper
  • Shiny metallic-coated wrapping paper and gift bags
  • Save ribbons, bows, beads, string, garland and tinsel for next year.
