FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - City Councilman Glynn Hines held his State of the 6th District annual address Saturday morning.

The address was held at Link's Wonderland on E. Creighton Avenue.

Councilman Hines highlighted the things the 6th District improved in 2012 and also the things the district is looking forward to in 2013.

Hines discussed his plans to renovate McMillen Ice Arena into a community center for both youth and adults.

Hines also said he wants more community involvement in the 6th District. He plans to do a survey where 6th District residents can identify which stores and restaurants they want to see come to the south side of Fort Wayne.

"The state of the 6th District is progressing. My theme today is moving forward," Hines told NewsChannel 15.

Hines also spoke about some of the items the 6th District crossed off their list in 2012, including the now fully functioning Renaissance Pointe YMCA , improvements to Pontiac Street, and the Renaissance Pointe housing initiative, where all 66 homes on Weisser Park Avenue have been leased.

Garry Hamilton, Deputy Chief with the Fort Wayne Police Department, discussed the recent string of gun violence in the 6th District.

Hamilton said the Black Guardians, a group of black officers, have come up with a gun buyback program to improve the 6th District's violence statistics.

The address also included a tribute to Indiana Representative Win Moses.

The State of the 6th District event will be aired on Public Access City TV, Comcast channel 58 and FIOS channel 28, beginning Monday, March 18 at 10:00 p.m. with the following six week schedule:
