293rd deployment canceled

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Close to 1,000 Indiana National Guard members will not deploy this summer after all.

This is because of budget cuts, and it does include a unit out of Fort Wayne.

More than 500 members of Fort Wayne's 293rd Infantry Division had trained for about two years for a mission to the Horn of Africa.

But federal budget cuts and military downsizing have forced the cancelation of that scheduled deployment.

Major General Martin Umbarger, adjutant general of the Indiana National Guard, said he's troubled by the move and is concerned about the country's ability to respond to threats.
