FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - In Saturday's of 28 Ideas in 28 Days” series, Heather Herron talked with Herb Hernandez, the head of the local United Hispanic Americans, Inc.
Hernandez took over as executive director after the retirement this summer of the organization's longtime director Rosa Gerra.
As Allen County's Hispanic population grows, Hernandez said its most obvious obstacles are education and unemployment. He said education needs to be encouraged and accessible because the high school dropout rate for Latino students has gone up. He also believes Hispanics are some of the hardest hit when it comes to unemployment because so many of them are unskilled workers who are the first to be laid off when a company makes cuts.
Our "Saving America: 28 Ideas in 28 Days" reports continue Sunday with an interview with Bishop Kevin Rhoades from the Fort Wayne/South Bend Diocese.
