KENDALLVILLE, Ind. (WANE) - Police are investigating a double stabbing early Monday morning at an apartment of a home at 669 Dowling Street in Kendallville.

Two people, 24-year-old John Prater and 19-year-old Kara Newport were taken to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.  Police believe the two people that were hurt, were the only ones involved in this incident. They have been in the hospital all day, so police have not had a chance to talk with them yet.

"I looked over to see my house surrounded by cops," said resident Kevin Sloan.

Sloan lives in the home at 669 Dowling. He couldn't believe it when he learned the couple who rents the front apartment of the house had been involved in a stabbing.

"They moved in here a couple months after I moved in. They're a good couple. They have fun all the time, party, you know, just kids," said Sloan.

The house has three apartments. One neighbor said he called 911 when the woman involved in the stabbing came knocking on his door for help.

Friends said Newport will recover from her injuries. Meanwhile, the county prosecutor said Prater went through surgery. He was last listed in fair condition at a Fort Wayne hospital.

"Which one is the more culpable of the two? I'm going to let the police turn in their investigation before I make that determination for sure," said Noble County Prosecutor Steve Clouse.

Clouse said he's not ruling out the possibility that Newport and Prater had self-inflicted wounds. He's waiting to see medical reports on the two that would shed some light on what happened.
