PORTAGE, Ind. (AP) -- Firefighters in northwest Indiana have rescued a worker who was trapped in a piece of industrial equipment.

Portage Fire Chief Tom Fieffer told The Times (http://bit.ly/12gqtMv ) the man was taken to a hospital in South Bend and was reported in stable but serious condition. He didn't identify the injured man, who was an employee of Frick Services at the Port of Indiana. The Wawaka-based company stores, loads and off-loads fertilizer.

Firefighters responded about 10 a.m. Friday after the man's arm was trapped in a conveyor belt that was part of a fertilizer elevator. Firefighters used electric saws and other tools to cut away materials pinning his arm. The man was trapped for about 90 minutes.

Fieffer didn't know how the worker's arm was caught.

The company declined comment.
