STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – Foul play has been ruled out in the death of Steuben County woman found in her home in the 6400 block of N. C.R. 300 W. near Fremont late Thursday morning.

According to the Steuben County Coroner, the cause of 40-year-old Shonda Zimmerman’s death is still undetermined pending toxicology results, but preliminary results have ruled out the possibility of any foul play.

However, witnesses told the KPC News that police once believed foul play was a factor .

One of the neighbors, Stacy Pingry, was contacted by police to see if she had seen anything happening at her next door neighbor’s. She told police her children heard one of Zimmerman’s children cry out, “why’d he kill my mom.”

As police were investigating the scene, Pingry said she saw the man who lived next door drive by slowly. She told police he was the man police were looking for.

“They told him to stop, but he took off,” Pingry said.

The man was stopped a short distance later by police in two vehicles who chased him.

Another neighbor, Lisa Rumsey, said she was contacted by police today at 10:30 a.m., wanting to know if she knew of the whereabouts of her next door neighbor in the 6400 block of N. C.R. 300W. She was informed that the death was possibly the result of a fight.

“That’s what we’re understanding, it was a domestic dispute,” Rumsey said.

Pingry said police were not certain as to when the incident occurred. She said she had not seen her neighbor for a couple days.

Zimmerman’s death will remain under investigation by the coroner’s office until such time as a cause and manner of death can be determined.
