MCLEAN, Va. (WISH) - Police say the wife of Senator Dick Lugar was arrested Wednesday evening for DUI following a traffic accident.
The accident occurred at the intersection of Old Dominion Drive and Dominion Reserve Drive in McLean, Virginia.
When police arrived at the scene they found 76-year-old Charlene Lugar’s vehicle with front end damage.
Officers arrested Charlene at the scene. She faces two misdemeanor charges including one count of driving while intoxicated and one count of hit and run.
Police believe Charlene hit a parked car.
Sen. Lugar released a statement regarding this incident to the media: "At about 6:30 p.m. last evening, November 18, Mrs. Lugar had a traffic accident in our McLean, Virginia neighborhood. A charge has been filed and a court appearance is scheduled for January. No other persons were in her car or the unattended car she hit. Thankfully, no one was injured. We are deeply sorry and embarrassed that this accident has occurred."
A trial is scheduled for Jan. 8 in Fairfax County General District Court.
