Snowy owl spotted in southern Indiana

WHEATLAND, Ind. (AP) -- A snow-white owl that's a frequent sight in the Arctic created a stir among Indiana birdwatchers when it recently stopped in the state's southwestern corner.
The Vincennes Sun-Commercial reports ( http://bit.ly/yly5Xn ) Tom Simpson of Monroe City spotted the snowy owl last week sitting on a fence post along Indiana 241 near Wheatland as he drove home from a trip.
The birdwatcher said he got within 10 feet of the owl and was surprised it didn't fly away as he snapped photos of it.
Another birdwatcher, Gary Bowman of Vincennes, says several people saw the owl. He says it's amazing the bird made its way so far south.
Snowy owls nest in extreme northern Canada and when they show up in Indiana, it's most often along Lake Michigan.
