FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Our partners at KPC News report that a semi rig caused extensive damage to an historic covered bridge in Spencerville on Wednesday.

Ed Farrell and Kelly Jacobs used Report !t to send WANE photos of the damage the semi caused.

The semi broke beams and roof supports along the full length of the bridge. It also knocked down a sign on the east end of the bridge as it drove out.

The bridge was built in 1873 and spans the St. Joseph River just east of Spencerville.

The driver of the semi was arrested by DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department deputies. The name of the driver has not been released.

A police officer told KPC news the truck’s driver stopped to ask for directions and did received instructions for crossing the a new bridge. Apparently, the semi driver’s GPS led him to the covered bridge instead of the new bridge.

Remember, if you see news, Report !t!
