BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) -- A new report by the National Science Board ranks Indiana in the bottom tier nationally in state funding to public research universities.

Last week's report says Indiana cut per-student funding for its major public research universities by 18 percent between 2002 and 2010.

The study says that reduced per-student Indiana funding from $7,403 to $6,071 during that period, placing the state in the bottom quartile in the nation when those figures are adjusted for inflation.

The Herald-Times reports the study says foreign nations are investing heavily in college-level research and are challenging America's dominant global position in science and innovation.

The National Science Board advises the National Science Foundation, which helps Congress and the president develop national policies that promote research and education in science and engineering.
